Norwell Reads: Wait Till Next Year: A Memoir

When historian Goodwin was six years old, her father taught her how to keep score for "their" team, the Brooklyn Dodgers. While this activity forged a lifelong bond between father and daughter, her mother formed an equally strong relationship with her through the shared love of reading. Goodwin recounts some wonderful stories in this coming-of -age tale about both her family and an era when baseball truly was the national pastime that brought whole communities together.

Join Norwellians in a baseball game featuring a Norwell ball team consisting of "celebrities" who will play the Vintage Baseball Team from the Hingham Historical Society at Norwell High School Saturday May 2 at 1 PM. Rain date Sunday May 3. The game will be played 1880's style using bats and balls used in that era.

Next spring Norwell residents will be reading Wait Till Next Year: a memoir by Doris Kearns Goodwin as our Norwell Reads selection. Her book is her warm account of growing up during the 1950's and is moving tribute to her father who taught her how to keep score of games at a young age and develop a life long passion for baseball. This book is sure to entertain and inspire you. At this time we are pursuing a speaker from the Red Sox Organization and welcome your ideas.

While the planning for the town-wide read is still months away, check this blog to learn more details as they are announced.

Dog Pack Attacks Gator In Florida

At times, nature can be cruel, but there is also a raw beauty, and even a certain justice manifested within that cruelty.

The alligator, one of the oldest and ultimate predators, normally considered the 'apex predator', can still fall victim to implemented 'team work' strategy, made possible due to the tight knit social structure and 'survival of the pack' mentality bred into canines.

See the remarkable photograph below courtesy of Nature Magazine.

Note that the Alpha dog has a muzzle hold on the gator preventing it from breathing, while another dog has a hold on the tail to keep it from thrashing. The third dog attacks the soft underbelly of the gator.

The Norwell Reads pet show/pet expo will take place Sunday, Mother's Day, May 11 2-4. Register your pet (applications available on line or at the library) or just come and enjoy the best of show! Healthy animal treats and information on pet adoption will be there for the taking. Meet the new pet mascot for the Norwell Public Library. Jasper, the Canine Disaster

Jasper joined the Perry household 3-1/2 years ago when Nancy sprang him from the Braintree shelter. Ah, what a mistake that was! Only kidding. Sort of. We'll explain. En route home from the shelter, Nancy had to stop for an errand at a bicycle shop. Commanding Jasper to "sit" and "stay" while she opened the car door, Nancy was forcibly ejected from the vehicle by 100 lbs of sheer thrust from the passenger seat, and barely managed to grab hold of the slobbery leash while being dragged toward the store, which, it being a nice day, had its door wide open. (You can probably guess what happened next.) Jasper, with Nancy in tow, bolted right on in and made a bee-line for the nearest display—white socks, of course. In clear view of clerks and customers, the Yellow fellow unabashedly lifted his leg and proclaimed those socks his own.

Now, we wish we could tell you that things got better after those first few weeks with our adopted hound, but actually the days, weeks, and yes, months, of getting habituated to this juggernaut of a pet, were something right out of the pages of "Marley and Me." We managed to survive it all, though, and you know what? The worst seems to be behind us. The sweet beast is family now; he's more or less (ok, less) "trained," and we wouldn't trade him for all the tea in China.
Hmmm … well, maybe if it were for a yorkie … . Just kidding-- really!

These are our new kittens - now 11 weeks old - Sasha and Storm (brother and sister). They are like little puppies, following me around, wherever I go. Siamese are so friendly and very smart. We can't wait to teach them some tricks. Right now I would be happy if they could learn to stay out of the kids' cereal bowls.

My name is Karen Lanoue-Lambrecht I am owner of PAWS-itively Obedient and a Certified Pet Dog Trainer. I have been in the animal field close to 28 years as I started my career as an animal health technician. In the mid 90's I adopted an 8 month old American Eskimo and within a short time enrolled in a group dog training class where I worked at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital. The instructor was a veterinarian and a behaviorist and I had a great time learning at the class and working with my new dog. I asked if I could keep coming to classes to learn more and thus started my desire to become a dog trainer.I started my business in May of 1995 and took a national certiication test for pet dog trainers in 2001.
A CPDT (Certified Pet Dog Trainer) must continue to attend educational seminars and accummulate CEU's (Continuing Education Units) every 3 years to keep their certification title. I also belong to the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) is a professional organization of individual trainers who are committed to becoming better trainers through education. Their website is a great source of information for the average dog owner where they can do a search to help locate a trainer in their area along with pet industry information ,visit the website at www.apdt.com

I love that the library has a blog. I also love that all of the pet owners of Norwell can share stories of their favorite animals. I was really moved by a lot of the stories in Marley and Me but Marley's highjinks cannot compare with those of my favorite pet, our cat, Sammy, the cutest, sweetest blended calico in the world. Sammy loves climbing into any open container that gets left around our house. Here she is snuggled up in an empty drink carton. You can't see it in the picture, but she doesn't fit very well and her whole rear end is sticking out the other side.
